Sysprep image and blinking cursor

Hello,
having to reinstall Windows 2000 Pro from scratch on some machines I
followed the basic Sysprep route, installing and configuring a single
machine, gathering drivers for all the others, running Sysprep and then
cloning the partition to the other machines.

No big problems encountered, unless this one: a particular machine does
not boot the duplicated partition. The PC starts up, I can see the first
Win2000 boot phase, the one with the white progress bar at the bottom of
the screen and the "F8" message, and after that the computer hangs on the
typical black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left.

I tried fixboot+fixmbr from recovery console, to no avail.

The HAL is the same (single CPU, ACPI), the PCs are not much different: I
started from a P4 3GHz, and cloned successfully on P4 2.4 GHz and Celeron
2.2GHz. The problem arose with a P4 1.7 GHz.

Any clues?
Thanks.
