Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have an XP image that has been working on a set of images and recently I wanted to make some updates (something I have done many times before).
One of the changes was to make the admin password in the sysprep.inf encrypted. So, created a new sysprep.inf file with the password encrypted and copied the password= and passwordencripted= lines to
the old sysprep.inf, and tested the sysprep.

When the system came up the second time (setting net work...) it said that it couldn't change the administrator password.

Basically, it works with the password cleartext, but not encrypted. Can anyone tell why this is?

Thanks in advance.

Gene,

Is the administrator password in the image set to blank?

No, it has a full ligit password. I recently tried resetting the password using a UNIX util, but that had no effect. Currently I'm testing a reinstall over itself to see if that clears/resets itself.
As a note, I have also attempted to delete the "%WINDIR%\System32\Microsoft\Protect\S-1-5-18\User" mentioned (by you ;) ) here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...2%5Cmicrosoft+sysprep&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en

I'll be sure to post the results of my most recent test.

Thanks for any assistance!

Just to let anyone that might be curious, reinstalling didn't fix this issue.

so, I have determined that this is a bug or error with sysprep. I cannot go from not encripted to encryped in my sysprep.inf.

Hi Gene,

This is what Scott was trying to say:

If you want to set the admin password using sysprep.inf (encrypted or
not), you NEED to set it to blank on the machine you're taking the image
FROM before running sysprep.

See
www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000pro/deploy/unattend/sp1ch03.mspx

"Note: If a password is specified in the Administrator account, you
cannot use AdminPassword in the Sysprep.inf file to change it — the
administrator password remains the same. However, if the administrator
password was initially blank (either manually or through an unattended
installation), you can use the AdminPassword key to change it to a
non-blank password."

Hope this helps...

Luke
