Sysprep & DHCP not working

B

Brian M

Hello-

I'm running into an odd one here; any help is appreciated. WinXP images
I've sysprepped work fine with static addresses, but cannot obtain an IP
address if they are switched to DHCP. Everything is fine on the DHCP
server (reservation, pool, lease time, etc.) end, and IP is loaded
correctly, but DHCP just doesn't work. This has happened with the
standard 3C905x, 3C920s, Intel PRO 1000 and Broadcoms, too. I think
there is something up with either XP or the Sysprep action, but don't
know where to start..

I have other information if people need to know more...

Thanks for the help,
Brian

Hey Brian. I'm loath to call this a Sysprep problem--I just have this
nasty feeling that it's something amiss on your network, down around the
physical layer.

Two things I would try, but both are a bit heavy-handed:

1) Uninstall the NIC in Device Manager and reboot. Let Windows
rediscover and reinstall it itself.

2) Take one of the Sysprepped boxes and rebuild it from scratch with
the CD.

If either/both of these bring up a good DHCP connection, I stand
corrected. If neither one works, then I think we can rule out Sysprep.

HTH!

even if both of these work it still doesn't mean it is sysprep.

Did the machine that was Syspreped get a DHCP address before it was
syspreped?

I just about guarantee it is not sysprep. It may be a setting that was
setup in sysprep by the user but it is not sysprep that is the problem.

I would try the 2 things listed and get back with us. Also can anything get
a DHCP address??? From the exact same port you are plugging your XP system
into. If so then that pretty much rules out any network problem. If that
doesn't work then you need to look at your XP settings something is
incorrect somewhere.
