I am trying to restore my XP Pro system and I keep getting a message it will
not restore...I don't have the exact error message as I am on a trip and the
problem is with my home PC.

I have many restore points ...most created daily (automatically)...I'll post
more details tomorrow when I get home.

Any initial thoughts?

Thanks....Joe

Hi
sounds like you might have run out of space. Check to see how many Mb
you have got alocated to system restore. Also try deleting some of
them.Keep me posted.

Is System Restore monitoring any hard drives other than the partition
( or drive if not partitioned ) where your Windows operating system
resides. If yes turn off System Restore on all other partitions drives.
Do you have any external / removable drives?

Hi Joe,

Take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have
been created recently that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

I screwed up and delted a mail profile in Thunderbird and can't figure out
how to get the old emails back...so I wanted to try and use Sys Restore.

Yes it is monitoring all hard drives...I have a 160 gig drive partitioned
into C, D, E, F drives...C is the Windows XP OS drive, D is used for games
and photos, and E and F are spares...old backups from a few years ago.

I'll try turning off SR for D, E, and F.

I went to the link...first choice was "Do you have Real Player installed" ?
I do, so I clicked that link but was unsure of why that is necessary....it
didn't reference Real Player in the next set of links....I can easily do
without Real Player if I need to uninstall it.

I have the full 12% allocated to SR on all drives...just under 1 gig.. I
have now disabled SR on all drives except he Windows OS drive as suggested
below.

One more update...I createdthe "Test" restore point this morning and it DID
successfully restore to it, although it wanted to go into Scan Disk upon
restart. I stopped the scan (as this also happened a few days ago and I let
it fully complete the scan and it found and I guess corrected many file
errors) and it successfully restored to the test point just created.

I'll next try restoring to a point a few days ago...before my screw up on
the email accounts.

Hi Joe,

The first event shows that SR encountered an error with a file named
"change.log" on HarddiskVolume3. You will want to set System Restore to
stop monitoring that partition/drive. It normally best to let SR only
monitor the partition Windows is installed on. This should take care of
the SR problem

How large is your C partition?

System Restore monitors your system not your data files.

I would pursue your wish to recover lost mail here:

Gerry--

The C partition is 75.7 GB..D is 73.3, E and F are each 14.3

I don't think I can do that as a search showed that file (change.exe) to be
on volume C...

C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache
#####################################

Hi Joe,

That's not what the Event Log shows!

From within WindowsXP, open My Computer and go to View - Toolbars and
check Address Bar.
In the Address Bar type %systemroot% then press enter.
What appears in the Address Bar?

Have you searched the other partitions for Change.exe?

C:\WINNT\ is not the default folder for WindowsXP files. Is this system
by change dual booting with Win2K and WinXP?

Hi Gerry--

I have tried using the Mozilla link you suggested...it restored my "sent"
mails but not my inbox....the mails are there (at least the data count shows
them to be there)
but I cannot get them to transfer.
