Syncronizing files when IP changes

A friend and I share a folder over the net. The file is on his machine, and I syncronized it onto my machine using Briecase- this works fine. The problem develops when he drops his connection and reconnects, as the ISP gives a new IP address, different to the one previous. My machine then will not sync, because it is "looking" for the previous IP address.

Question: How do I tell my computer that the IP address has changed and therefor briefcase should sync with this "new" IP, as there is no dialogue box to change to the "new" IP address.?

Thanks for help in advance..

Have your friend sign up for a dynamic DNS service. It lets him
assign a domain name to his computer, and it updates the IP address
associated with the domain name whenever his IP address changes.
You'll access his computer using that domain name, and you won't need
to know his IP address.

I use http://www.dyndns.org and the update client called DirectUpdate.
Web searches for "dynamic DNS" and "update client" will show many
more.

I hope that your friend is aware of the dangers of sharing files over
the net and has taken steps to prevent access by undesired Internet
users.

Steve, many thanks for the informative response.

Final question, Is it possible anywhere in XP to "edit" that IP address, rather than use the DNS service?

Regards

You're welcome, Peter.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your question. What do you mean by
"edit"? Which computer do you want to run something on to "edit" the
IP address.

Dynamic DNS is the easiest way I know of to make a computer's dynamic
IP address known to someone else.

Your friend might be able to get a static IP address from his ISP,
probably for an additional monthly charge.

Steve, thanks for the advice.

Ok we have got the DNS service and all is well when accessing though I.E., all files displayed, user name and password controlled via the server admin working great.

Now when I try to connect using the My computer/Mapnetworkdrive/add network place wizard, I can connect, the user name / password dialogue appears. I enter the user name and password, the dialogue then comes up with : Username : ADDRESSBEINGMAPPED\USERNAME and requests the password again. Any Ideas?

Steve, a little more info -

when I connect using the IP address ie: \\IPADDRESS\SHAREDFOLDER the drive is mapped, but when i connect using the DNS address ie: \\DNSADRESS\SHAREDDOCS it asks for the username and password, none of the passwords I supply work ie server /computer guest account etc.....

HELP!!!

Peter

I'm sorry, Peter. but I've never tried to connect to a shared folder
over the Internet, and I don't know what the problem is.
