Synchronizing folders in Outlook 2007

I am a home user and I just upgraded from Office 2000 to Office
Standard 2007. Today an icon in the system tray said that Outlook was
synchronizing folders. I cannot find anything in Help to explain this
to me.
1. What folders would it be synchronizing?
2. Why do I need it?
3. Can I control it and if so, how?

1) It's doing a send/receive on the background
2) You want to receive new mail, right?
3) Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup-> button Send/Receive

Synchronising means OL is polling for new mail i.e. undertaking a
send/receive
How often is subject to the 'check for new mail every xx minutes' setting in
your mail options

I went to Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Send/Receive. All automatic send/
receive options are unchecked which is the way I have always done it.
(I am stuck with dialup access and I don't want my bandwidth disturbed
when I am doing something else.) Any place else that might be causing
this?

There is also an option to check for mail on starting OL

I cannot find anything other than the three choices in
Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Send/Receive and they are all unchecked. Is
there another location?

Set Outlook in offline mode; File-> Work Offline. You can then manually
initiate a send/receive by pressing the Send/Receive button.
