Is it possible to run Outlook on multiple PCs (in a home environment) and
have both PCs show all emails, contacts, calendar etc? Can this be done
without a server?
tks
You can copy the .pst file over to the other host and open it under another
instance of Outlook. However, Outlook demands write access to the .pst file
which means it has a lock on the file. That is why multiple instances of
Outlook cannot open the same .pst file: the first one that opened the file
has it locked, and the rest want write access, can't get it, so they fail on
opening the .pst file.
You can configure your e-mail account in Outlook to leave messages in the
mailbox on the server. You can then look at it from multiple locations;
i.e., each Outlook is downloading a copy into its own .pst file (and not
sharing it) but leaves a copy of the message on the server. You'll have to
decide how to configure the settings under the option to leave messages on
server.
Alternatively, you can use an IMAP account instead of POP3. IMAP is geared
to having its mailbox accessed from multiple locations or hosts. You will
have to check with your e-mail provider to see if they provide IMAP
accounts, or get one elsewhere.
However, whether you leave messages on the server when using a POP3 account
or use an IMAP account, that only lets you "share" the mails. For sharing
calendar, tasks, public folders, etc., you will need to get collaborative
software (aka groupware).
