Symbols appearing on new document.

Recently whenever I open a new document in Word 4 symbols appear in each
corner of the document. I cannot select or highlight them and I'm not sure
what they are. They look like a right angled V with the apexes pointing
towards the inside of the page. When I double click on them a page setup
dialogue window opens. Our IT guys say they may have something to do with
page or text borders. How do I turn them off?
