Symantec update stops Internet access

Friend is running XP home. SP2 installed. New Computer came with Symantec
installed. Ran Symantec live updates Aug 30 (included Internet Security).
Since then she cannot access the Internet. Dialup begins with all the
appropriate sounds and screen, but then starts again after a long period of
static. (Server says it is a Symantec problem) She tried Uninstalling Norton
through add and remove, but that didn't help. I accessed the Symantec website
to guide her through the uninstallation process. Could not delete the temp
files using their instructions. The next part of their instruction was to
click on a link which led to a Page not found. Next step was to click on a
link which she can't do since she has no access to the Internet and it only
analyzes my computer. How can she get rid of this monster or possibly fix it?
Thankfully I have only the NAV running with only definitions updating. I
also Plan to get rid of the entire Symantec program.
Thanks.

Something else must be going on. I run this exact environment with no
problems. There may be some setting in Norton's Internet Security that need
to be updated.

Make sure the the Windows firwall is not enabled at the same time the Norton
Firewall is running. This could cause problems.

Have you tried the obvious: system restore to a point prior to when this
happened?

Does not sound like a Symantec problem to me. If she were able to uninstall
the main folder with the executable files in it, then Symantec cannot load
and cannot be blocking her internet access. The temp file would make no
difference in this matter. If she had no internet access, then the "page
not Found" is to be expected.

Symantec is really the best protection money can buy. If you do decide to
go with another product, please research carefully. McAfee has had serious
problems lately, and the "free" virus scanners are not always as effective
as Norton.

I tried McAfee and it almost drove me crazy with false alerts. My little
home Network also became unusable because it wouldn't allow the PC's to
"talk" to each other.

I went back to Norton. All has been well ever since.

Tried the restore -no change. She never gets to the Page not found screen,
just the dialing screen, over & over. (We only have dial up service in our
area. Beautiful here, but a bit remote.))
Symantec site says that there could be a problem with temp files not being
deleted. However when we tried to delete them the way they suggested, got
message "cannot be deleted-in use by another program"--Not that we could
tell. Then Symantec says to change the register, but that required a click on
a link in their website, to download a file which she, of course cannot do.
