Symantec Real Time Storage Protection Error

J

JS

When trying to un-install Windows Defender (one version back from the
current release) using the Add/Remove programs option I get the following
error message:

"An installation for Symantec Real Time Protection Storage Component is
currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to
continue. Do you want to undo these changes".

I'm currently using Norton AV 2007.

If I select YES then the un-install fails and Windows Installer is hosed.
Tried all the known tricks on fixing Installer did not help. Installer will
no longer work to install or remove programs. Removing Windows Installer and
then try to re-install Windows Installer only made things worse to the point
where I had to re-install the Image Backup of the C partition I made
yesterday.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's been a while since I worked with NIS; however, there are a few things to
observe. Symantec will automatically update their own software signature
definitions; you have to initiate (via update manager) a search for Symantec
software updates and install them. So that may be the source of your
conflict. I would also turn off Windows Defender real-time protection when
using NIS. So I would turn-off WD real-time protection; update the NIS
software; reboot; turn off NIS (you can leave the firewall on) and then try
to uninstall WD.

By update manager, I mean live update. Also, should things get "hosed", you
could try System Restore instead of a back-up image copy (I too have
encountered issues where a restore point didn't work correctly after Norton
got messed up). Instead of turning off NIS via its own mechanism, you could
disable the registry Run key for NIS and then after installing the latest
version of WD turn the run key back on. Good luck. BTW, I dropped Norton a
long time ago and I am happily using Grisoft AVG.

Yep, the next time I try to un-install Defender I will stop NAV from loading
and see if that works.

Thanks

It's amazing, there is no way to totally stop NAV from loading. I have tried
the NAV interface to selectively stop and also a tool named 'Autoruns' and
as a last resort tried to kill the NAV services that are running.

Have sent Symantec an email requesting tech. support (48 hr wait). You can't
even use their chat feature as this must install and during the install I
get the same error message initially reported.

Well Symantec responded by blaming Microsoft for the problem, if they know
this is a problem why didn't tell me what the fix was instead of just finger
pointing!

Look at the thread Defender update fails ....
and look at only my last post under Mr Cat dated 12/13/2006.
This post provides a procedure to manually uninstall Windows Defender
without going through the installer/uninstaller. BTW, now you know why I
dropped Symantec/Norton.

Got the instructions, thanks.
Question: Is the use of Ccleaner necessary for your fix to work?

Not sure. It will clean up a lot of registry junk left behind by WD and
"other" products. You could use Windows One Care cleanup as an alternative
but I have not experienced any ill effects using Ccleaner.

Things just so bad I had to use Ghost to roll back to an image made before
NAV 2007 was installed (this meant that NAV 2006 was on the PC). After the
roll back I was able to un-install Windows Defender using the Add/Remove
option.

Note that Symantec Tech. Support started to respond to my support request
few days back but the end result was that they wanted $29.00 to tell me how
to un-install their product, this was because simply disabling it (using
msconfig) so it would not load during a re-boot did not help and screwed up
Live Update after going into msconfig and re-enabled all the crap, which is
why they wanted me to totally un-install it.

At least you got WD uninstalled. Thanks for the feedback. Fortunately,
Ghost is a good product. I have used it in the past to restore a system.
Good luck.
