Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

In other words, it's redundant.

Sort of, but not in the same sense. If the AV mailscanner detects a virus,
it won't allow downloading of that file. Same for outgoing mail, won't send
the file as part of the email.

With just NAV on, the virus does get to your email inbox and thus on your
PC. Get's detected after the fact.

So, the mailscanner makes more sense to me to be enabled/on. Irregardless
of Symantec or anyone else's opinion.

Not strictly true since the mailscanner can't scan something that is not
already on your PC. It does however draw your attention to it which may
be better than it sittinmg on your computer until you actually access
the file.

I'll buy that.

If its not causing any problems, then by all means use it. Howerver, it
is very common for it TO cause problems, or, if you are having a problem
with email, then disable it.

Apparently you're not familiar with NAV's email scanner. Basically, it
works like this:
Email is downloaded and forwarded to a email scanner proxy site. This is
where the email is scanned for viruses. Email has not reached your desktop
at that time.

The proxy setup is what usually screws up, either by a configuration
problem, or a firewall restraint the user is unaware of. If you can't fix
it, yes, by all means remove the enable checkmark for it in NAV's
configuration setup. This will allow receipt of email without proxy virus
scanning.

If it does work, by all means use it.

So are you saying that the email scanner somehow moves the email to
another computer somewhere else without ever first having to download
the data it is scanning to your PC?
