A friend of mine got infected with the swen virus on his WinXP Home system
and I get to fix it. The system boots both in Safe and regular mode.
I have been able to remove the virus using the Symantec removal tool but the
system but it did not fix the registry and the system is still not right.
I cannot choose properties for My Computer. When I try and run a program
inlcuding System Restore and items in the Control Panel I get a message that
says "Can not find rundll32.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly. .
.." FWIW the icon for rundll32.exe is a plain white icon although the
properties tab looks normal.
I tried to run some a reg utilities that restores these associations and but
had to re-associate ref files with regedit. Even after doing this I get a
message "Cannot import showerror - Error opening the file. There may be a
disk or system file error."
Any suggestions other than wiping out the HD and reinstall everything?
TIA
