....when cpu arrives,
....will XP do it all for me, or will I have to fiddle with HAL layer ?

Nothing required for you to do except make sure the BIOS is fully up
to date.

No problem. Not 100% sure about it but do a windows update afterwards
and check the drivers in case there's any newer CPU driver listed than
what's in SP3. SP3 should be current but just in case.
