svhost.exe ??

Hellow, can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out what windows
programs are running using svhost.exe as a description. I cant seem to find
out what they are but there are sometimes 3 and sometimes 5 that say they are
svhost.exe and some use a lot of ram. When I check task manager that is where
I see them. Everything that is in the msconfig/start up options are all
accounted for when I compare that with task manager. Is there a program or
software that can tell me what the svhost realy is??

If you really meant svhost.exe, it is a worm/trojan/virus. See links below.

If you meant svchost.exe...

A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314056

If you have XP Pro, open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
When the Command Prompt window opens type:

tasklist /svc

Hit your Enter key.

It will display something like this...

svchost.exe 700 RpcSs
svchost.exe 752 AudioSrv, CryptSvc, Dhcp, helpsvc,
LanmanServer, LanmanWorkstation, Netman,
winmgmt

tasklist.exe does not come with XP Home.

The following works. I did it when I had XP Home.

1. Download Tasklist.exe.

Tasklist.exe available here:
http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm

Or...

Microsoft Windows XP - Tips & Fixes
Click on:
Tasklist.exe - Lists all processes & services (/Svc)

Or...

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/tasklist.zip

2. Copy tasklist.exe to

C:\WINDOWS\system32
or
%windir%\system32

3. Open a Command Prompt.

Start | Run | type: cmd | Click OK |
When the Command Prompt window opens type:

tasklist /svc

Hit your ENTER key.

Also:

tasklist /?

Displays Help and usage.

svhost.exe is a worm/trojan/virus.

svhost is service host and is used to run different services
and for seeing which services are using this svhost go to command prompt

and then type tasklist /svc and press enter

now analyse the output

I get this type of error when i start or re-boot my machine. It also appears
several times during running. I cannot check the tasklist from the cmd....
According to my computer tech this is a trojan program running that hides
itself, and the only solution is to reformat the hard drive and re-install XP
and all programs and data... Is there any solution other than wiping the
hard drive clean? I have tried Registry Mechanic, Norton, AdWare and Spy-Bot
to no avail.... Thanks
