svhost.exe Problem

Dave Smith

I have just re-installed Windows 2000 due to a hardware
problem, unrelated to the above.
System seemed to be running OK, until I connected to the
internet, initially goes on line OK, then the message
"svhost.exe has caused a problem and will be closed down,
an error log is being created"
Can anybody out there tell me hoe to cure it.
Have seen it once before many moons ago, then I re-
installed/Repaired the install.
Hoping I don't have to do that again.

Because you haven't installed the ms03-039 patch before you got on the
internet, you got blasted.
Open Taskmanager and look for the msblast.exe, mspatch.exe or
teekids-proces. Kill it and go to www.sophos.com to get the removaltool.
After that install ms03-039 from microsoft to prevent from happening again.

I think you mean svchost. This is a common symptom of many viruses
including MS Blast. Run a full virus scan and install all critical updates.
If you still can't get on the Internet to download service packs, etc. - Try
Safe Mode with Networking. If that doesn't get you on the Net, use Regedit
and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Backup and then delete any suspicious entries.
