SVCHOST - Memory could not be read??? Application Error???

Although my Windows XP Pro boots up and accepts the logon prompt, it stalls
when loading programs and gives the error message: "The instruction at
'OX77F57BD2' referenced memory at '0X00000010'. The memory could not be read"
It then staes that the following: 'SVCHOST - Application Error'

At this point the machine is frozen and needs to be manually powered off
(unplugged) since it will not shutdown in Windows. I can boot into SAFE mode
without this error???!!! Can someone advise or recommend a fix?

Thanks,

I noticed you didn't include virus and spyware scans for
those free downloads to help with everything they promise
but don't tell you about startup programs and registry
items that fool with your pc.

If you don't have virus protection, Symantec test your
computer's exposer to online threats.

If you don't have reliable spyware removal, you can get
it with spybot free at :

page=spybotsd#clean

I suggest you run the spybot scan. It will run awhile.
WHen finished ,clean recommended. Some entries will be in
memory. The program ask if you would like to fix at next
boot up. Reply yes

It has an automatic backup so you can restore fixes.

You'll also need to remove startup registry items also.
Highjackthis is available free at:

They can help you with interpreting logs. Just follow
their instructions. You can wait for their interpretation
or you can look for 04 startup entries. I suggest you
delete any software startup thats not store bought
software.

I had reliable anti-virus software running 24/7. PC-cillin. In addition I
did run several spyware removal utilities such as, HIJACKTHIS.EXE, SPYBOT,
Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder, miniremoval coolwebsearch, peppercleaner, etc etc
as well as System Mechanic for bad registry entries, spyware, etc...

Nothing in the log for Hijackthis suggested anything wrong. It was very
clean.

This was something picked-up from browsing the net that NONE of the above
mentioned programs or software could deal with!!! Probably got hit from the
Japanese X-Rated sites.. they are the worst and most dangerous!

I finally booted into safe mode, did a system restore from 4 days back and
that fixed it. Before that I could not get online or even open a simple
program due to the read error mentioned earlier.

Thanks in any case for your suggestions but I tried all of them before I
posted my message.
