svchost.exe???

My firewall keeps popping up telling me that C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
is trying to access the internet. Even if I type yes to allow it, it comes
up again a little later. What is this program? Is it something I need, or
is it some adware or spyware device? Thanks for any help. I don't want to
remove it without knowing what it is for.
