When I look at the list of processes running in task
manager, I see seeveral copies of SVCHOST.EXE from my
poking around I see this is a switched virtual circuit
manager, but there are 4 of them running taking up a total
ov about 25 meg of ram. They're even there when I
disconect my computer from the network entirely. Anyone
know exactly what SVCHOST.EXE does, and how to reduce its
memory usage?

SVCHost is the interface that runs a whole slew of services on behalf of
the system. They get loaded in batches with a new svchost for each -
hence the 4 or 5 instances. The VC manager will be just *one* of those
services. 25MB RAM for the lot os pretty normal.
