svchost.exe

"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
windows. You will need ro restart the program. An error
log will be created". This error message has plagued me
since I switched my operating system to Windows 2000. I
use a dial-up connection. Initially, I researched the
eror message and found Microsoft article - 319161, which
indicated that the problem could be resolved by making
some edits to the registry editor. I have followed the
directions in that document with no success. My internet
provider then speculated that I had the blaster virus and
recommended that I install the patch from the microsoft
site. I have had no luck with this either, at the end of
the download I always get a message that my service pack
does not support the download, even though I have tried to
download just about every version of the patch that
microsft lists (Is it possible that the virus is
interfering with the download?) Last night, my Symantec
virus protection software alerted me that I had
the 'w32.welchia.worm' virus. I followed their
instructions and downloaded the "fixwelch" tool off their
website and successfully removed the virus from my
machine. However, after doing that and then connecting to
the internet I get the same standard error message shortly
after connecting "svchost.exe has generated
errors.....etc...". This is followed by another message
from my viris protection software that I have
the 'w32.welchia.worm' virus. Starting to sound like an
endless loop. Is their something I can download on my
machine that will prevent me from getting the "welchia
virus"? Can anyone offer up a solution to this problem. I
am just about ready to throw the computer out the window.
Thanks.

Hi

Yes - I have absolutely the same problem - and all started
after installation of SP4.

All went just fine with SP3.
