SVCHOST.EXE - RAM overflow problem

STW

On upgrading to Windows XP I am having a problem with a
process that is eating up memory. When I check the Task
Manager a process with the Image name "SVCHOST.EXE" and
the User name "Local Service" is building up its file
size to the point where Windows manager eventually kicks
in to upgrade the available memory. Applications that are
running grind to a halt. When I go into the Registry the
Data listed under this service is "Alerter WebClient
LmHosts RemoteDirectory upnhost SSDPSRV". What is this
thing? What can I do to shut it down permanently?

I am having a huge depletion of resources issue with my XP Home Edition, also. They are listed as processes, and my tune up utilities recommends dealing with them. However they are not specific as to what they are, or what they do, or "how to deal with them." I am using TuneUp Utilities, and I have asked them by Email. I'm awaiting reply. Meanwhile I will try to get some info from Microsoft. Had any luck yet ? Reply back to me if you get any info., I'll do the same
