First, Stop the Automatic Updates service when the system first boots
up. Go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK or press Enter
Now connect to the net.

* IF * the error does not pop up now, then see this article -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1071

Install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent (WUA) and then

If a window pops up during the installation of WUA please refer to the
instructions posted May 4th.

IF stopping the AU service did not resolve the issue, then you'll have
to include the Event ID from the Event Log.
First, restart the AU service from Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

Opent the Event Log now - Start > Run > type in

Windows Update Agent has always been turned off.
Do you still think that may be the problem?

Windows Update Agent [client] are the software controls
The files are installed to the system

Automatic Updates is the service that allows the system to update
automatically
Enables the download and installation of Windows updates. If this service is disabled,
this computer will not be able to use the Automatic Updates feature or the Windows Update
Web site.
Now, is the Automatic Updates *service* Disabled ?

Is Automatic Updates, the NOTIFICATION/CHECKING mechanism that
*initiates* downloads, installations, or notifications, turned off ?
This can be checked by either clicking My Computer on the Start Menu or
Desktop, choosing Properties, then click Automatic Updates

If both the service and it's client, Automatic Updates, are disabled,
then the issue is NOT related to AU

I haven't seen the problem since I recently turned the Windows
firewall on.
(I didn't think you needed it since I use dialup and didn't have a
fixed IP address)

Spybot hasn't picked up anything either like it used to.

I have also downloaded and installed a major security fix.

I also found an assembly program that shows all open ports.

Also found some source code that shows ALL activity of any browser. It
worked thru
Win 98. I will have to modify it to ask for the 'SeShutdownPrivilege'.

Thanks.
