svchost.exe Memory Leak

I am in need of some sort of fix, I am having a memory leak with SVCHOST.EXE
on my machine. If I reboot is automatically goes to 70k worth of memory. If
I let it sit over night -it goes to an astounding 120-320k worth and my
machine moves like molasses on a cold winters day. I then have to power
button cycle it in order to recover. Plus that (I heard) isn't good for the
pc let alone harddrive.

What services are running?

Sounds like the Indexing service is running, it's a memory hog.

If XP Pro, use tasklist /svc in a command prompt to see.

Tasklist.exe does not exist in XP Home and the tasklist /svc command will
not work.

CiSvc is the Indexing service.

Windows XP may run slowly and you may see multiple symptoms in Windows Task
Manager

it may due to a recent update.

your posting is like maybe the sixth
or seventh about a runaway svchost.

although many have provided suggestions,
i think that the one i have been providing
might be of some help.

the first person to post an issue like yours
also found his own solution when he
renamed the svchost file. Since then
someone told me that if you rename the
file, windows silently recreates it.

try looking for the svchost.exe file and
rename it to something like svchost.bak
and see if this helps.
