svchost.exe cpu 100%

Windows 2000 Professional ( service pack 4.0) , 26 RAM 600mhz pentium
3 machine . every thing works fine until i clicked windows media
player to watch movies or a clip, svchost.exe occupies 99% of my cpu
and hangs. I checked for virus , it is clean. Recently i reinstalled
w2k from win98. If any one aware of this problem and rectified it ,
please help me.

I just want to confirm whether it is a virus or just bad driver
installation.

Click on Start/Run and key in Regedit and press enter.

Wait for a few seconds. Does it close automatically? (Please reply to NG)

What happens when you double-click:

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe

Same thing?

thanks for your reply, i double clicked it, and looks fine. but when i
run a movie through wmp svchost.exe cpu usage went pu 100% and
hangsimmediately.

I meant you to try playing a flick in the WMP I gave you the path to. Does it do the same thing using that one? I'm assuming your default WMP is version 9.
