svchost.exe causing problems

when I boot up, my soundcard works and is recognized

minutes later, I find "No Audio Device" and the sound no
longer works -- under hardware, the card is still there
and "working properly"

I noticed that I lose the soundcard after an SVCHOST.EXE
appears at the top of the Task Manager list (with no user
name associated with it)

when loading up an IE window I have found at times it will
hang for about a minute, then after an SVCHOST.EXE
disappears from the top of the Task Manager list, the page
loads

there are other SVCHOST.EXEs in the Task Manager (all
associated with users); I have tried uninstalling/re-
installing the audio driver; I've scanned for viruses

I have only noticed these problems since installing
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB867801)
last week (??)

I found an application error in DRWTSN32:
c:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe 80000007 <nosymbols>
(00000000)
what does this mean and what should I do next?

thanks

Look in the event viewer for further information.
