I have configured SUS to run on a domain with no problems,
however domain admins do not seem to get updated, is this
correct?

Rob,

It has nothing to do with the user account.
Have you correctly configured the group policy settings to tell the machines
to us your local SUS server and what policy as regards timing to use.

Make sure your domain admins accounts are in the right ous along with the users who are configured under the ou which has the sus group policy attached to it.
