Interested in surfing the Net, but not having to ever worry about viruses,
trojans, worms or other malware? Here's a neat way of doing it ...
1) Go here: http://byzgl.sourceforge.net/
2) Under Download, click on the "iso" link
3) Under ByzantineOS Images click on:
Download byzantine-i586-20040404.iso.gz (under 45MB)
4) Select a Mirror to download from
5) Save the file to a folder on your computer
6) Unzip the file and you'll have:
byzantine-i586-20040404.iso
7) Open up a CD burning app like Nero and choose to burn an image (don't
just copy the iso file to a CD)
8) Burn the CD
9) Restart your computer making sure your BIOS is set to boot from CDROM
first
10) ByzantineOS will boot and let you (quickly) choose the resolution you
want to run your monitor in.
11) You will quickly get to a GUI desktop that is essentially the Mozilla
web browser. Here you can surf the web, play an assortment of card games,
instant message, etc. (the browser comes configured to use both Java and
Adobe Acrobat)
Since nothing on your computer is touched and the OS is running from RAM,
you can safely do all your web surfing without ever being concerned about
being attacked. When you want to quit, just remove the CD and turn off your
computer.
For people with more expertise it's possible to create your own ISO image
that can contain things like photos, music and movies, so that you can have
a multimedia machine running exclusively from a CD that you can take to any
PC and run.
Just a small example of the possibilities and versatility of Linux.
