Thanks.

I _think_ the hosts file can only (be used to) block sites, not pages
within the sites. BICBW.
It can be installed.

It can be un-installed.

What's not to like ?

What Andy said: constant nagging up upgrade; I found that clear.

But the fact it can be uninstalled, means you can go backwards
if you want.

In fact, I did exactly that on this computer.

I needed to do a Repair Install of WinXP.

When it came time to activate, the activation process used HTML.
The process was broken. The computer would not activate using
the IE6 built into the OS!

So, I installed one of the other versions of IE. I did the
activation procedure. Then I uninstalled it. Now, I'm back
to the IE6 (which I never use for surfing, and is used
for Windows Update).

That's the part I like about it. Is it can be removed, if
you don't like how it works. Not like, say, DirectX, which
has no removal mechanism. If you have DX 7, you install DX 9,
you can't go back to DX 7.

Thanks.

I am very happy that you got your problem solved.

My process was a little more involved.

Booted to Safe Mode

Deleted iexplore.exe

Found out I had two ie.inf files that are used to install iexplorer.

The newer one installs the service pack 3 version. (dated 2008)
That for sure was not going to be used. :)

I used the other one, dated 2004, to reinstall iexplore version 6.0 sp2.

So, far it's running o.k.

I talked with someone else having problems with I.E. 6.0.

I think from now on, I will be extremely cautious with any update or service pack.

Take care,
Andy
