can one change the boot.ini so that only the basic service required for
booting Xp are started?
ie resulting in the same result of msconfig.exe?

Why? I am trying to fix a replacement pc migrated from an old one. The
Original PC boots and starts up some app in drive J: which is drive E in the
new PC,

Furthermore, the system drive was not C:.

I can boot the new pc but it never get to the login welcome screen

I don't know if 'services' is the right word. Outside of Win XP
that's servers in client/server stuff . Even within Win XP e.g. the
messenger service .

sounds like win is messed up maybe do a Repair.

Safe Mode would do min processes. If that doesn't work then min
processes won't help.

normally regarding startup probs i'd have said install bootlogxp , but
I guess you can't do that 'cos you can't get into windows. I'm sure
windows can be set to log processes in a file, showing where a crash
is. That might be the current setting. In which case, if you can't stop
the process running, you could gamble and try deleting it. Better to
do a repair than mess with things that shoudln't be messed with.
