Suppose you booted partition D instead of C, then decided to install
an application on D, would the apps registry settings install to
partition D or C?
Your question is very confusing, so I suspect you may be confused about how
this works.
You can't boot a partition, you can only boot an operating system. If you
have a system with a single operating system installed (Windows XP) on drive
C: but also have a second partition D:, there's no operating system on D:
and it can't be booted. When you install an application, its setting go into
*the* registry (there's only one for Windows XP) and it's on the drive where
Windows is installed--normally on C:.
On the other hand, if you have created a dual-boot machine with two
operating systems installed, one on C: and one on D:, then you can boot
either operating system.
In that dual-boot scenario, if you boot from the operating system on D: and
it's an operating system that uses a registry (not all operating systems do)
then an application installed under that operating system will put its
settings on D:
