Superscript in chart's x-axis

I would like to category labels with a superscript in them. Is this
possible?

Even though my data is formatted correctly, and the superscript shows, the
superscript is ignored when the chart is displayed. The chart is produced by
a macro, so I'd be happy to use VBA if that would provide a solution.
