superfetch for linux

Why am I not hearing all the chatter about somebody ripping off someone
else? Like how Vista ripping off ideas from Linux and Mac? ;-)

Competition is good. These guys will come out with something that does it
better, then Microsoft will one up them and they will play leap frog. This
is only good for the consumer.

vistas superfetch it seems now has competition on linux systems

Always playing catchup it seems.

Oh, the joy of instinctively picking a loser all the time

you gotta be kidding.. MS is the biggest copycat on the planet!

it has innovated NIL!
it steals, copies, buys but never ever ever ever innovates!

superfetch programs have been around since 1995 I had one running on win95
but with 8 mb ram it did more harm than good..

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! How dare Linux rip off an idea from Microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And KDE and even Gnome aren't a rip off of older Windows?

Obviously. competing GUIs like KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc. are attempting to
copy Microsoft's basic GUI. They do attempt to do it differently
however. There is nothing inherently wrong with that approach.

Of course. MS spends millions and KDE spends nothing on user research. What
then is the point if Linux if it is just an MS clone.

The point is choice. An end user can choose a GUI that meets his or her
needs. There are numerous GUI flavors available in the *.nix world.
Unfortunately, Microsoft offers only one.

An end user should have the right to choose the GUI of their choice.
That includes the choice of an OS. Nothing more and nothing less.

I believe in standards. All computers should be identical.

That is clearly a fascist/socialist statement. I believe in choice.

Microsoft tries to offer options for the GUI. Different themes are
available, as are third party addons that can change the way it looks
dramatically. If you want it to look like KDE, GNOME, or the Mac interface,
they are available.

I'm a big fan of UI customization, I really like the way XP & Vista allows
for more of that. wincustomize.com, for those that don't know, is a great
place to look up different looks and feels for Vista (& XP).

You can configure every element of the KDE desktop. You can put your
Menu button anywhere you want. I like to put mine in the middle of the
taskbar, next to the multple desktop selection. I like to have 10
desktops. I run one program fully maximized in each desktop. I switch
desktops rather than windows. I keep the Windows XP virtual machine on
one of the desktops. I have a different background for each desktop,
which are easily downloaded using the configure desktop button when you
right click on any of the desktops. There are a wide selection of icons,
colors, themes, cursors, and backgrounds. You can totally change the
appearance every day, if you so desire. You have a choice of many
applets to install on your taskbar. Weather, time, moon phase, news
ticker, log/log out buttons, volume, etc..

Unlike Windows, you have complete control over your computer and its
appearance.

I believe in compatability.

The word you are looking for is 'compatibility'.

compatibility != identical

Probably why you and kde aren't allowed to design cars. Be a hoot to swap
brakes and throttle.
