Hello,

I just bought a new HP Pavilion a475c with Windows XP Home
Edition from the store. When I attempted to upgrade it to
Windows XP Professional Edition (with legal license), the
PC turned into a blue screen with error warning about a
corrupt sunkfilt.sys file. I tried it twice but failed
before XP Prof got to install on the PC.

Any ideas or assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
T

Thanks for the advice. I did call HP up as soon as it
happened. But they said I should call Microsoft because I
was upgrading from Home Edition to Professional Edition.
And they only help if I have the original configurations.

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried removing all attached printers and
devices except for the mouse, keyboard, video card and CD Rom drive?
Also after removing the printer then go into My Computer | Properties |
Hardware | Device Manager and uninstall the printer. Keep the printer
unattached and reboot. See if you can delete that file. Then try the
upgrade. If it works, attache the peripherals and install their drivers.

Hi Guys,

To fix the sunkfilt.sys error, unplug the media reader from the
motherboard. This is a driver error.

Reboot, and windows will work. After windows installs, plug in the
card reader and everything will work great.
Hope this helps you...

Just wanted to confirm this post and say thank you... I was just helping a friend out and was doing a repair installation when I got the error message

Thank you so much for saving me from a complete re-installation!
