SUMPRODUCT

I am trying to sum individual cells based on were the items were purchased
from. For example, column B contains transactions, i.e card payment to
halfords, dowdings etc. . Column D contains the purchase value.

If one of the above named transactions was in say cell B14 and value in D14,
how do i sum this in respect that I want the formula to look at cell B14 and
check if it contains either the words halfords or dowdings and then report
the value. I have been using SUMIF but this only works with 1 condition thus
I have several columns containing SUMIF functions.
From all other posts it looks like SUMPRODUCT should do the trick but I
cannot figure it out.
I am also pretty new to all of this and fumbling my way about so please bear
in mind before baffling me with your brilliance.
Thanks

Ian

you could use 2 sumifs

Sumif(....)+Sumif(....)

or try
Sumproduct(--(B1:B100={"halfords","dowdings"}), D1:D100)
