summary slide icon grayed out

I want to create a summary slide. Instructions say to
select first slide of a custom show (group created ok)and
click on the Summary Slide icon from the Slide Sorter
toolbar, but this icon is grayed out. Using ppt 2003.

Thanks for any help.

The Summary Slide is created by using the "Titles" of the slide(s) you have
selected in Slide Sorter view. Try selecting several slides that have
titles in them, then click on the icon. A new slide with the title
"Summary" will appear with each of the selected titles in a bulleted text
box on that slide.

Help doesn't mention custom shows and tells me:

To introduce or close a slide show presentation, you can create a slide that
includes the titles of selected slides in your presentation. A new slide, with
bulleted titles from the selected slides, appears in front of the first selected
slide.
1.. In slide sorter view, select the slides whose titles you want to use.
To select multiple slides, hold down CTRL and click the slides you want.

2.. On the Slide Sorter toolbar , click Summary Slide .
