SUM IF and ranges

I am tryig to limit the number of rows I am calculating as using a sum if calculation.

In cell ref A1, I am doing a counta(A2:A1000), within these rows only 150 are currently used. Everytime I update a cell within the counta formula increases.

What I need to do is limit the range using the counta formula, eg. A2:Ax (x = counta range).

=SUM(IF(C2=(A2:?? - What do I need to put in the ?? so that it shows the cell reference from A1 number??
