Suggestions desired: I want to run two computers (both have XP Home and ethernet cards) off of one c

I access the internet via cable modem and wish to connect a second computer,
running in the same room, to the same modem so that it may also access the
net through the same modem. I bought a router but, ran into a snag, right
away.
The modem is a RCA DCM305R and connects to my primary computer, via a USB
port. This same computer does have a network card. I installed an ethernet
card in the second computer, as well. I also have a Linksys BEFSR41 router
with RJ45 port for the cable modem and four other RJ45 switched ports.

I just don't understand how to hook it all up and configure the computers to
work with the same modem. My primary works fine with the cable modem...I
want the second computer to do the same. Can anyone assist?
Thanks
just email me, directly, if you know what to do

Questions asked in the newsgroups are answered in the newsgroups.

You have several options.

1. Network your two PC's together with Linksys Router and configure
Internet Connection Sharing over the network. Windows XP Help and
Support has information about how to set up and configure ICS.

With ICS the computer that the USB modem is connected to must be
turned on and booted up in order for the second computer to access the
Internet.

2. Purchase a new ADSL modem that has an RJ45 (ethernet) output
instead of USB and use that with your rourter.

3. Purchase a new combo ADSL Modem plus Router (there are quite a few
models of this) and use that.

Good luck

I would add that you should uninstall any third party firewalls before
trying to setup ICS as they can interfere with it. Obviously enable XPs
built in firewall before going online. Once you get ICS working on both
computers you can reinstall your firewall and if ICS won't work you know its
the modem causing the problem. I say uninstall as just disabling a firewall
can still leave components running and the firewall working in some
capacity.
