suddenly loads of windows pop up ...

i have windows xp sp1 and for the past day at certain
intervals about 10 command/console windows pop up trying
to run the "net" command, they all fail with some error
about the share not being found and then disappear only
to appear again a few seconds later.

i'm also running microsoft office XP and the only
software i've installed recently is drivers for my new
intellimouse optical

Definitely time to scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a
version not earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions).
Although I suspect this comes from spyware. Remove spyware with Spybot
Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe
Mode.
