Sudden 'loss' of user data

Cannot access any data under 'my documents' any more.
Computer seems to have lost access to all relevant data.
The data is physically still there but I cannot access it
as folders have been replaced. I can also not search for
it and copy it. If it is not possible to fix the problem
and somehow reconnect the correct data to 'my documents',
is there a chance of at least saving the data that used to
be in these files? Is there a software which does what
windows explorer does?
Thanx

Have you recently created, deleted or changed the User Accounts on the
system? If so and you are logging in with a different user account, you can
simply take ownership of those folders and files to regain access to them.
The following article will guide you.

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

Ronnie, Thanks.

The problem is that these folder do not appear anymore
(they have been replaced by empty ones). And no, I have
not recently changed or introduced new users...

What do you think?

You said "The data is physically still there but I cannot access it".
Could you explain this further. If you can see these files, what happens
when you try to access them?

I had a similar problem twice--last time yesterday. Yesterday when I went
to my computer it had shut down with no intervention. When I re-booted all
of my documents in "My Documents" were gone----Word, Excel, MS Money, My
photos---all gone!. The same thing had happened 2 months ago at the end of
May. (I wonder if it was the same calendar date---May 31?)(No 31 in June)
Fortunately I had some critical backups. I no longer use the My Documents
default, I have a new folder for all of my documents. I downloaded a trojan
killer "The Killer" and it found about 12 Trojan Horses that Norton seems to
have missed. The names of some of Trojan Horses included n-Case, Dylicm,
Gsim, VB.nt, VB.oq and Dyflia.
After deleting those files I had several problems: I was unable to open many
of my programs (Outlook, Explorer, Word). I was unable to have the system
shut down so I physically powered it off. On restart it went through the
disk checker and my desktop returned with a message that my registry had
been damaged and to click on a option to repair. I have no idea where the
message came from. Anyhow everything worked fine since them. If you have
any info on this please email directly at (e-mail address removed).

Hank,

Thank you for your advice. I currently cannot install any
software and the system wont even let me run an online
virus test (may be you know of one that works). I am
pretty sure I cought a virus by now. I dont mind re-
installing everything, but I need to get to my 'my
documents' and pst files (outlook), can you advice further?

thanks a million,

Bernie

Use Stinger by Mcafee. It goes on a a floppy disk. This only checks
for a limited number of viruses but hopefully it will clean your system
enough to allow you to run the AV you have in Safe Mode.
