If msft wiz backup cant b/u to a dvd-r
then what was it intended for?

To backup to backup devices. DVDs are not backup devices. Tapes drives are.

Please note the DVD-R came into popularity AFTER the intial release of XP.
Also, there are "better" backup software that the standard bkacup from MS.

It's for backing up to tapes. The capacity of DVD is just not enough in
many cases. http://www.firestreamer.com/fsrm/ allows Microsoft Backup
to write DVDs.
