substituting one word for another globally in a document

In writing a short story or a novel it is sometimes desirable to replace the
name of a character for another one. It would be tedious to do it on an
individual basis. Is there a way around this?
 
On the Edit menu, click Replace. In the "Find what" box, type the name
to replace. In the "Replace with" box, type the new name. Click
Replace All.
