substantial increase in file size

I created a word document in the 2003 version. The document included
imported excel charts also created in version 2003. I recently upgraded to
office 2007. When I modified and saved the files I saved to the older
compatible version so others could open the file. The modified file size
increased from 400kb to 1.75mb. It became too large to become an attached
file. Is there possible solutions?

docx files are considerably smaller than doc files, and everyone can
download the Compatibility Pack so they can open docx files in earlier
versions of Word.

Word's DOCX format - the default document format for Word 2007 is
essentially a compressed form of XML. i.e. a ZIP file, which is why it is
smaller than the uncompressed DOC format. I don't think it reasonable to
expect others to have to download extra software to view your documents, and
if you are exchanging documents in a corporate or education environment they
probably wouldn't do that anyway, so if you want smaller files to e-mail,
use a zipping utility (WinZip/WinRar etc) to compress them to zip format.

Thanks so much for the responses. I have been sending the files as a zip
file. Is it possible to attach a program to unzip the files? It has been
making co-workers nervous that they must first open a trial version of a
winzip to open my files.
