Is there a faster way than going to the
"format/font" menu?

The default keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl+= to make the selected text subscript,
and Ctrl+Shift+= to make it superscript.

If there are particular molecular formulae that you use often, make them into
formatted AutoText or AutoCorrect entries.
