Subject: Error - BCM Install (Program & SQL)?

G

Gary Phillips

When I tried to install BCM (2007) on an XP Pro laptop with my Action Pack
DVD, the installation process stopped near the end and the following message:
"Setup failed to install Business Conrtact Manager for Outlook 2007. See
C:\Documents and Settings\Gary Phillips\Local Settings\Temp\MBSsetuptmpAD.log
for more detail."

I had no problem installing BCM on my Vista Home Premium desktop from this
same DVD.

Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 was previously installed on this laptop.
When I do get BCM to install on this laptop, what do I have to do to get BCM
to use this already installed SQL or does BCM just install its own SQL
instance automatically under the Microsoft SQL folder?

What do I have to do to get BCM to install and work properly on this Laptop?

I don't know what's wrong on your laptop, but in answer to how BCM
installs sql: I beieve, from looking into one of the setup config
files, that BCM setup asks the sql installer to install sql and create
the BCM instance. When the sql installer detects that the sql bits are
already on the machine, it simply creates the BCM instance (MSSMLBIZ)
and starts that service.

There may be issues when the sql version on the machine doesn't match
the sql bundled with BCM or it is running under some user that doesn't
have permission to do something (although permission problems tend to
be more common on Vista than on XP), but the sql installer's logs
should provide some details about the problem.

If you're not using the sql on the machine, you could uninstall it and
let BCM setup do a clean install of sql.

Thanks Luther! However, I have narrowed the problem down to the Registry by
looking at a successful install on my desktop. For some reason their is no
Path in the SQL registry and the install of the instance was only partially
completed (under Prog Files/MS SQL/MSSQL.1, the folders are empty but the
instance is there as a Service!! I have unstalled and reinstalled many times
with the same bad results. This seems to be a Registry problem but that is
beyond my skills! How do I get to a Microsoft Tech Support person so I can
E-mail them the Log File and get help in resolving this problem?

As it turns out, the problem was that a previously installed SQL program
(ACT! V7.0) did not completely unistall - left over were Windows Installer
fragments, the ACT7 service, registry snap in SQL code, and the SQL Program
Files folders (which could not be deleted until the service was deleted).
Doing all of the above is not for the weak of heart, but is did solve the
problem and BCM installed just fine.

ACT does have tendency to leave crumbs behind (i.e. outlook plug-ins, etc).
