subfolders in imap

Is there any way to create subfolders in an IMAP account? For
instance, I have my inbox, junk mail, deleted items, sent items, and
administration, but I'd like to make some subfolders under
administration for courses, reviews, etc. Whenever I try to do this, I
get a message that it's not allowed.

Anyone know a way around this? Does everyone who uses IMAP just have
one level of folder heirarchy???

Thanks for any help,

David Epstein

you can do it if your imap account allows it. Can you add them from other
clients?

Hmmm. No, I've never been able to do it from other clients either.
Does that mean I should contact my university's computer services
department and ask whether they have (or could) set up our IMAP so as
to allow subfolders? What would be an example of an IMAP setup that
*does* allow subfolders, as opposed to one that doesn't?

Sorry for the basic questions, but I'm new to all this.

It's completely up to the IMAP server whether or not this is allowed. The
IMAP server I use, for example, has an "allow-subfolders" directive that can
be placed in its .imaprc file. This will allow me to create a folder
structure like
Mail
Notes
Stuff
Whatever
