sub report detail section is too big

I have placed a subreport in the detail section of the main report. When I
view the whole report, the sub report records appear as expected. But tow
problems:
1 A black box surrounds the subreport detail. Where did it come from and how
do I get rid of it?
2 The sub report is just one line but the there is enough space for multiple
lines before the next main report record appears. Thus my report is many
pages too long. I have deleted sections that might cause this.

What is the design height of the subreport and is it set to Can Shrink: Yes?

Yes; can grow and can shrink.

Where is this "height of the sub report" determined: sections? whole report?
fields? Do I determine that when I create the sub report or after it is
imported into the report?

By giving the detail section of the main report a color background I am able
to determine that the extra space is the same color as the detail section of
the main report.

On another note, how can I run an access macro for a different database
while I am in another database? I have linked tables and a different database
needs to be udated for the information in the databased I am working in to be
valid. I do not want to exit out of the present database, run the macro in
the other databes , then return to the original databaes.

"the extra space is the same color as the detail section of the main report"
suggests the problem is with the size of the detail section of the main
report and has nothing to do with the subreport. Is the detail section set
to Can Shrink?

Fixed by can shrink both report and sub report. I didn't realize that was an
option in sections and fields. Thanks

How about my "on another note questions?"
