I teach in a 30 station lab. Randomly throughout the lab, the Styles Group
displays in BLACK AND WHITE instead of color (default Blue). On these
stations, most of the Styles Group is also unavailable.

This may be related to your problem with the Picture Tools Format tab. I
wonder if it could be a result of a High Contrast setting in Windows |
Control Panel | Accessibility Options. A simpler explanation, however, might
be that "Default (Black and White)" or "Word 2003" is selected as the style
set.

Good idea!

But when I set up those computers (chose) for default BW or Word 2003, the
ribbon still did not allow me to use colors or fonts (greyed out) under the
"Change Styles" button.

I've recommended a total reinstall but hate to put my techs through that if
there is something I'm not catching.

Ah HA, Suzanne! You are correct. "...your problem with the Picture Tools
Format tab..." The students are saving their files as Word 2003 which does
not allow all the functionality the rest of us are used to. Thank you!!!

Yes, I saw Bob Buckland's answer, and of course he had nailed it!
