Style Sheet template changes

In Word 2007, I have made changes to my style sheets within a template. Is
there a way for the modified style sheets to transfer to existing documents
using this template? I was thinking it might be via building blocks, but am
not well versed in that concept.

How about:
Developer Tab > Document Template > Automatically update document styles?
This resets the document styles according to the style definitions in the
attached template.
You may want to turn it off after it has updated the styles, otherwise you
may lose manual formatting each time you open the document:; if, however,
you are strict when applying your styles, then it will not make a
difference - until you change the style definitions in the template, that
is.

If you do not have the Developer tab displayed on the ribbon:
Office Button > Word Options > Popular > Show Developer tab in the Ribbon
