Style problems in Word 07

In Office Word 07 (Windows Vista), I cannot find a way to solve a formatting
problem I’m having. When I highlight a paragraph to change its style, the
whole document changes to the style I chose for the selected paragraph. Also,
If I change a paragraph’s word-font size or color, the whole document changes
according to the style in the selected paragraph.

I opened Microsoft Vista’s “Modify Style†box, but, unlike in Windows XP,
there was no checkbox for “Automatically Updateâ€.

I also clicked on the Office Button and selected “Word Optionsâ€, and the
“Popular†on the “enable live preview†was already checked.

Furthermore, none of the “Styles†box selections solves the problem.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Windows Vista" Modify Style dialog box. The
only difference between the dialog boxes for Windows XP and Windows Vista
are the control menu buttons and that's an appearance only.

It could be that you are viewing a Character style or the Normal style, they
don't have the Automatically Update option. You may need to find the
underlying Paragraph style. View the Styles task pane (click the Dialog Box
Launcher in the Styles group) and at the bottom click Style Inspector. It
should show you the Paragraph style and Character style that is in use. Then
click the arrow next to the Paragraph Style and click Modify and see if the
Automatically Update option is selected.

Thanks for your reply, Beth.

I looked in the Styles task pane, which I think is named <Change Styles> on
the ribbon, but couldn’t find Style Inspector.

Change Styles is for switching Quick Style Sets, Theme Colors, and Theme
Fonts. What you want is just below the Change Styles button, the dialog box
launcher. It's the little button with the arrow. You can also press
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Styles task pane. Once displayed, you'll see
the Styles Inspector at the bottom, the middle button with the magnifying
glass.

Thanks, Beth. My use of Microsoft Windows terminology is faulty, obviously.
It may be the chief reason my posts confuse you.

I'll try you latest suggestions. Wish me luck....
