Style Changes not being saved

Greetings: After re-installing Office XP / Word 2002, I attempted to modify
my "Normal" style. I did Format>Styles and Fromatting, then clicked on
Modify for the Normal style. I made my changes... SEVERAL TIMES, but when I
close Word & reopen, it reverts to the default settings.

My toolbar cahnges are not being saved as well.

How can I fix this?

You need to have the style change saved in Normal.dot:
In a new blank document (i.e. a document based on Normal.dot), modify the
Normal style as you wish. In the Modify Style dialog box, check the "Add to
template" box. Afterwards, press and hold the Shift key while you select File
menu > Save All. If a dialog box opens, asking whether to save changes to
Normal.dot, click Yes.
