Stuttering problem

I have a fairly new install of Win2K. I am using an AMD cpu with 512 mb of
ram and 3 hard drives. C: is an 80GB WD D: is an 80GB WD and E: is a 120GB
Maxtor. They are all running from an Ultra133 controller in a PCI slot.

The system runs great except for one annoying thing. As I am working and
moving my mouse around, every so often the mouse will stutter. In other
words I can be going from the left side of the monitor to the right and the
mouse will stop in mid move, jerk a little bit and then move smoothly.

This happens randomly with no rhyme or reason. It does not happen
consistently during certain applications but randomly no matter what the
application. It is driving me crazy.

I have had task manager running while I was working to see if maybe my
memory went to zero but it does not. It does seem that there is a spike in
the CPU usage at the second of the stutter BUT it does not seem to happen
every time.

I have eliminated background processes that I am sure are not important but
the problem persists. With my old Win2K installation this was never a
problem and I have reinstalled nothing different from the last one.

Any help in figuring this our would be greatly appreciated. Even if you can
lead me to a diagnostic approach that would be helpful in figuring it out
would be great.

It would help to know what kind of mouse you have. If it's the kind with a
ball inside of it, maybe you just need to clean it.

I would have that problem with this optical MS mouse. It would jump around
sometimes. I bought this nice Logitech cordless mouse, it works much better.
Very smooth....

Mine prats around when the rollers in the mouse get mucky. I pick off the
gunge with my eyebrow tweazers (nice eh!). When I had a Microsoft cordless
mouse, the batteries were forever getting low and that would cause sticks
and stops. I agree with you about the Logitech mouse. My sister has it and
it's very nice.
